How the Habitat Program Works
Habitat for Humanity is a homeownership program. After we build the first home with the help of volunteers, we will sell the home to a family who has gone through a rigorous screening process and participated in building their home. The homes are sold at no profit to Habitat and with a no-interest loan. Families make a down payment and contribute 250-500 hours of sweat-equity to help build their own home, as well as the homes of other Habitat families. Their monthly mortgage payment helps fund more Habitat homes. Our homeowner families also participate in Home Buyer Education classes, which help foster increased economic independence and self-reliance. Qualifying families are 1) currently in need of decent, stable and affordable housing, 2) are willing to help build their home, and 3) meet our financial requirements.
Worldwide, Habitat for Humanity has more than 2,300 local affiliates, state support organizations and national organizations in nearly 90 countries. Completing a home somewhere in the world every 10 minutes, Habitat builds nearly 26,000 homes per year around the world
