The Big Habitat Yard Sale was held on May 5th in the Big R Parking Lot – 1319 Main Street in Cortez. It was a huge success thanks to all the hard working volunteers.

We had about 30 visitors to the Habitat booth (#21) at the Four Corners Builders Association Home and Garden Show. It was on Friday May 4th (12-6) and on May 5th (9-5). The show was at the Montezuma County Fairgrounds in Cortez, Colorado. We made some new friends and spread the news that Habitat is at work in Montezuma County.

‘Brush With Kindness’ helps homeowners with repair projects

Habitat for Humanity of Montezuma County would like to remind the community about the “A Brush with Kindness” home repair program. Applications are now being accepted for projects to be completed this spring. The purpose of this program is to provide assistance to low income homeowners of Montezuma County for basic exterior home repairs or improvements where the homeowner might not otherwise be able to perform the physical work or afford the financial outlay for labor.

Applicants for this program must own and occupy the home within Montezuma County for which they are requesting repairs. Annual income cannot exceed 60 percent of combined median household income for the county, and the applicant must be willing and able, over time, to repay the cost of the materials and agree to partner with Habitat in all aspects of the repair project. The program is designed “to provide needed assistance to our neighbors, revitalize the appearance of the neighborhood, encourage connections within the community, and most importantly, help preserve affordable housing stock.” With the success of this program, we all benefit by having a more beautiful place to live and raise our families.

Applications for the “A Brush with Kindness” program can be accessed online athttp://habitatmontezuma.org, or interested parties may contact the local office at 565-8327 or mail a request to Habitat for Humanity of Montezuma County, P.O. Box 1261, Cortez, CO 81321. Applications will be reviewed in the order in which they are received, and all applicants will be contacted regarding the status of their application.

Pie Fundraiser Thanks and Update

Our affiliate sold over 90 home-made apple pies and wishes to thank all who purchased one … or more! You helped make this fall fundraiser a great success. In addition we’d like to thank the students from SWOS who helped peel, core and slice apples. They were real troupers. Thanks also to the Sparks Family Farm for donating the wonderful, locally grown apples which we used for the pies.

HFH invites the public to annual meeting

Habitat for Humanity of Montezuma County will hold its annual meeting Wednesday, November 9, at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 28 E. Montezuma Ave., Cortez. The meeting will be held at the little house just to the east of the church at 6:30 p.m. Open to the public, the board will share the previous year’s accomplishments and discuss goals for the upcoming year. All are welcome. If you’ve considered getting involved with Habitat, please plan to attend.

Peeling for Pies

Southwest Open School students Ty Ford, Michael Morehead and Cody Redbird peel apples to make pies at Seas’nings Catering on Friday. Money from the pies will be used to help Habitat For Humanity, and the pies were sold Saturday at the Cortez Farmers Market. Pies can be ordered by calling 565-2156.

It’s time to order homemade apple pies to raise funds for Habitat. Home and apple pie… for many, these thwo things remind us of family and good times shared. Habitat for Humanity of Montezma County is now taking pre-orders for homemade apple pies, which will be ready for pick up on Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Cortez Farmer’s
arket, or the week of Oct 24-28 at Seas’nings Catering.

Payment in advance – $15 donation each – is requested. Money raised will assist Habitat in providing decent, affordable housing to county residents. The pies will be made with local apples in homemade flaky pastry, with your choice of double crust or cinnamon streusel topping. Habitat’s ‘Brush With Kindness’

This article and photos appeared in the Cortez Journal on 7/30/2011. Habitat for Humanity’s Greg Kemp replaces boards on Loretta Durrett’s deck. Habitat volunteers finished their second“A Brush With Kindness” project July 20. They were helping out homeowner Loretta Durrett of Cortez. They replaced some rotting boards on her deck and shed, painted trim, rehung a small door and waterproofed her deck.

The Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors wants to thank The Community Foundation Serving Southwest Colorado and specifically the Dear Family Fund for the $500 grant awarded to Habitat of Montezuma County. Habitatappreciates this support and hopes those who are able will help to increase the Foundation’s ability to provide grants to the nonprofit community. Habitat for Humanity will use the grant for “A Brush With Kindness” projects that help low-income homeowners with small home repairs and external maintenance.

“Growing endowments for local causes – Building stronger communities”

The Community Foundation Serving Southwest Colorado awarded a $500 grant to Habitat for Humanity of Montezuma County to support our home repair and rehabilitation efforts in the community.

The Community Foundation Serving SW Colorado was established in 1998 to improve the quality of life in the Four Corners. And also to build a culture of giving to and supporting the many non-profits that serve our area. One of their primary functions is to make grants to the many non-profits and charities providing for our citizens. In 2010 we granted $132,279 to qualified non-profits and scholarship programs.

The Foundation is a tax-exempt public charity that allows people or organizations to establish permanent endowments funds and gift funds within one large foundation and it offers inexpensive, value-added way to establish a family named foundation. The income from these funds, and the principal if the donor desires, is available to respond to emerging community problems and opportunities.
